CareFirst (CFMI)
A 30% increase is almost criminal I would say. I am umemployed and struggling to make my payments. A increase like this and I can't afford health insurance.

The 30% proposed rate increase will result in premium expenditure for myself and my husband of $1200.00 per month for a plan with a combined $7000.00 deductible ($3500 each. Currently, under MHIP, I pay $878.00 per month for a combined deductible of $5000.00. With this level deductible, it is unlikely that Carefirst will pay any claims on our behalf, but will be collecting and substantially higer premium than we currently pay.

In a 12 month period, our insurance premiums increased 58%. Because our rates have increased so much and we live almost 65 miles away from a hospital with services (2 of our 3 children can not be admitted to our local community hospital - no GYN/OB, no Cardiologist, old radiology machines, no pediatrician, on staff etc etc), we are being forced to really consider life changes. 58% - from $574 in 2012 to $908 in addition this is a high deductible policy - so the anticipation is that a consumer is supposed to save the deductible in an account - it is just sustainable. We were led to believe that our premiums would reduce with an increase of consumers enrolling in insurance programs. It has been exactly the opposite. We operate 2 small business, 2 kids in college - and yes, we make tough decisions about life options. it is all about priorities - but healthcare should not make us sick with worry…..which it has. Don't raise the rates.

Why is it that the other insurance providers are not proposing as large an increase as CareFirst? It seems that those overseeing the Maryland Insurance Administration decisions on proposed rate increases need to take a long look at why there is such discrepance between CareFirst and other insurance providers regarding rate increases. I am on a very limited budget and I thought that Affordable Care would be affordable and not be looking at a 30+% increase in the first year. Was it just a ploy to get us to sign up?
